Amphorae were used to store and transport wines and oils throughout the Mediterranean region for centuries. They were so common, that it was cheaper to throw them away than to return them to their origin-point. Due to their ubiquity and sturdiness, amphorae are prized by maritime archaeologists as they indicate the age of a shipwreck and its cargo.
