Idabel, OK (January 30, 2019)—The Museum of the Red River has announced its February lineup of programs. First, is a Beer and Baskets workshop with Linda Lou Alexander on February 9, starting at 4 pm. Participants will make a square, flat reed basket. Cost is $45. Registration is available on the Museum’s website or over the phone, (580) 286 – 3616. The following Saturday, February 16, the Museum will hold a free watercolor painting workshop. Attendees will utilize basic techniques to create a picturesque ocean scene. Participants can drop in and drop out anytime between 10 am and 3 pm. The workshop is part of the Museum’s “Fun With” program, a series of classes designed to connect people through art.

Eric Singleton will lead a tour of the Museum’s North American Cradles exhibit on February 28 at 6:30 pm. Singleton is the Curator of Ethnology at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The show features fifty cradles from twenty different tribes. Museum curator Daniel Vick stated, “cradles are one of the most striking symbols of native American childhood”. He noted that cradle making was reserved for “the most accomplished and skilled artisans.” According to Vick, most cradles were made as gifts for special newborns. Families that didn’t have their own cradle often borrowed one until the child outgrew it. As such, a single cradle was often used for generations. The walkthrough is free and open to the public.
